"My friends in Poland wrote to me and wanted to know how I was getting ready for the trip, and what I was going to be bringing with me. Good question. My OCD has been itching to answer that for awhile now. The only thing standing between me and the obsessive process of packing my bag, then unpacking it and packing it again, cataloging, weighing, considering and reconsidering its contents with mathematical equations and imagined scenarios for the next 2 months is the fact that I don’t have it yet. Gregory Packs is sponsoring me with a pack, so I’ll need to practice patience until it arrives. It must be the universe’s way of saving me from my own mania, although I’ll probably end up just counting and recounting pairs of socks in my dresser to bide my time until it appears. Maybe instead I’ll make a list. Lists help crazy people to feel calm.

Then I’m gonna pack all that and my laptop into bag one and two that Tom Bihn sponsored me with. This will be my day pack.
In my regular pack I’m going to have all my cords, cables, and charging accouterment, a translator that talks to people (not sure how rude this will be, but it’s do or die), watertight bags to put equipment in if need be, a few changes of clothes, my travel underwear that ExOfficio sponsored me with (just tried these out the other day and they’re extra comfortable!), a sleeping bag, a tiny tent (that I’ll probably never use for the first year), and a notebook.
I think that’s it. Hmmm… I feel a little like I’ve just turned myself into a prime candidate for robbery… But I know kung-fu, and never underestimate the power of a hug. Hugging your attacker will 99 times out of 100 confuse them into submission. Trust me on this one.
Other things I’m doing to prepare:
  • Booking tickets
  • Lining up Visas
  • Making arrangements for the cats to enter the UK
  • Watching squirrels frolic in trees
What I want to know is; Why are squirrels always second guessing themselves? When faced with a moving vehicle barreling towards them, I have never once seen a squirrel choose a direction and confidently run for their life. Always, without fail, they begin to run, stop dead in their tracks and pause to consider; Hmm, is this the way I should go, or maybe the other way? and then turn around and retrace their steps in an act of utter lunacy, back into the path of the moving vehicle, despite the fact they they were just steps away from safety moments before. It’s maddening really. I propose we start some sort of a squirrel empowerment workshop, raising awareness around issues of squirrel self-esteem and helping them to trust in their own judgment. If I have time I’ll do it. Although I may bust my budget buying all the snacks I’ll need in order to lure them to class."
